Step 1- Read all the comments from the previous assignment.
Step 2- Choose one comment which is thoughtful.
Step 3-

First, paraphrase the comment you are responding to: For example: “Ms. Russell thinks that…”

Then, write a question about the chosen comment. The question must be: clear, sincere, useful and be the sort of question which leads to more questions. The question you write must complicate the comment’s argument, make the reader of the comment you are questioning think deeper. Stir up some intellectual trouble.

  1. Ms. Sullivan thinks that for students to promote a better education is to hire outstanding teachers. My question to her is what if there are not enough teachers. Then what will students have to do with not excellent teachers.

  2. Ms. Kashem thinks the best way to promote a student is by telling teachers to make sure their students understand what he/she teaches. My question to her is what if the students don't understand something and they are afraid to speak up. How’s the teacher going to make sure he/she understands the topic?

  3. Ms. Swintelsky thinks that “providing every American with a quality higher education” is extremely important. She doesn’t know how the city can afford to pay more teachers without causing other important jobs in society to be lost. My question to Ms. Swintelsky is, what do you think the best solution is for “providing every American with a quality higher education” in today’s rough economy?

  4. Ms. Blau said that if you ‘Improve teacher quality’ you will learn more because you like the teacher better. My question to Ms. Blau is: what happens if teacher quality is improved, but you find the subject or teacher boring? How are you going to keep yourself from zoning the subject out? If you do this, you will get your homework incorrect and not do well on tests. Finally, your report grade will reflect this.

  5. Ms. Shoukat thinks that the effort that best supports student education is for “students to pay more attention”. My question to Ms. Shoukat is “What if students can’t pay more attention?”. There are many things that could prevent students from doing this. They me be having trouble at home with their parents and the economy. They may even be trying to pay attention, but their teacher is too boring.

  6. Ms. Shoukat says that paying attention will promote students education. I do believe this but I have one question for her. What advice would you give teachers to make the children pay attention more? I believe with fun lessons and a good teacher that you can have fun with will help kids quiet a lot.

  8. Mr.Rehman thinks that improving teacher quality is the best effort that promotes student education. My question for Mr.Rehman is what if teachers are already trying their best to give their children the best education they can get? What will they do if they are already doing that?

  10. Ms. Swintelsky thinks, “National Assessment of Educational Progress should make the federal test harder.” My question to her is how will making the federal test harder going to best promote student education. Instead wouldn’t it put pressure on students taking the federal test?

  11. Ms. Perez said that the best way to promote better education is that:” students should pay more attention to school.”My question to Miss. Perez is “How do you stay focused in school if you don’t like the teacher or the subject is boring?”

  12. Ms Perez said that the best way to promote bettter education is that "students should pay more attention to school" My questions are

    1. Do YOU pay attention ?
    2. What do we do if we don't really like the subject or the teacher?

  13. Mrs. Swintelsky thinks the National Assessment of Educational Progress should make the federal test harder. My question to you is how is making the National Assessment Educational Progress federal test harder will help promote student’s education. Also it could put pressure on them and maybe the best student could become a not so good student because of the pressure.

  14. Ms. shoukat thinks the best way to promote students is that they should pay attention. My question is "Do you think thats the only important reason, if not what other things should student do?".

  15. Mr.Luca says that students should listen instead of playing and slacking. You also said students should take responsibility and they should go to tutoring for help. Sometimes it is not the fault of the student that can’t comprehend the material the teacher says and sometimes they can't get extra help from the teacher. So my question for you is, what would be your method to make sure students understand what the teacher says?

  17. Ms.Mei thinks we should "...show up for school on time, pay attention in class, ask for help when you need it, and stay out of trouble to get good grades. Students shouldn't drop out of school. One mistake and it will affect your whole life." I agree with her but everyone makes mistakes at school; so how will making one mistake affect your whole life?

  18. Mr. Short thinks that making school start at six or seven o’clock in the morning and have school 11 or 12 months a year would promote a students education. My question for him is, What will students who live far away from their school do if they school started at six or seven o’clock? Also, how would this keep students in school? I believe more students would drop out of school because of this.

  19. Mr. Shor thinks that staying in school longer like starting school at 6:00 AM or 7:00 AM and having school 11 or 12 months will promote us. I disagree with him and my question to Mr. Shor is do you really think that school and learning is the only thing you need for your future life?

  20. Mr. Mahmud said that he agrees to part of what Secretary Duncan said. He said that longer days and hours in school "may help us do better in school and outside school". Students get so excited when they have a weekday off. Students will get frustrated and angry that their summer vacation is in school and not outside. So, my questions to Mr. Mahmud are:
Do you think you'll do better if the school day and year is lengthened?
How will it help us outside of school?

  21. Mr.Shor thinks that having a longer school day and year will help us in school. That might work out for some people but for other maybe not. Some of the parents have to work or the child has to take care of a sibling and other responsibility around the house. Some students barely have time to do there work. Also I think that every child needs a social life or they will be to stressed out to learn anything. My question to Mr.Shor is that what about the people that can not adjust to your plan to help us in school?

  22. Mr. Rehman says that he disagrees with Secretary Duncan’s thought that we should lengthen school days. Most of the people in my class think this. My question is asking if they were basing their answers mainly on the fact that they don’t want to be in school more than the already have to. I mean come on people. We all know that nobody wants to be in school more than 8 am to 2:20 pm, but if we weren’t in school would our disagreement with the Secretary stay the same or would it change our opinions? Mr. Rehman went on to say that kids will “hate” school more if they lengthened the school year. This might be true and it might cause kids to drop out more, but lengthening school days might have been a better idea to him if he were already done with school (including graduating college). When he graduates I’m sure he’ll have a different opinion than he does now. I’ll leave you with this decision. Is it really based on his opinion or our own selfish needs?

  23. Ms.Airin Kashem says that the best way is to make sure teachers know if the students understand. My question is what if their is a shy student who is too shy to tell the teacher that she does not undestand. Maybe a student is scared to ask the teacher a question.

  24. Mr.Wong says that in India and China there is less edaction when most of your classmates said theres more but you agreed on one thing that there should be the same amount of school day or even less also i think you were right about the edication part because he said if there would be added more hours or minutes of school there would be a seroius drop and i dont agree since we have extended day whitch increases 37 minutes but you have a choice to go and students get higher grade so i dont totally agree with you and Obama said to work harder so i do not totally agree with you and try to answer why its better not to have extra time in school even tough i said it to i want to hear your statment

  25. Miss Zohra believes that long schooling hours is unhealthy for students because they cause too much stress and keeps us from having a social life. However, do most students know how to use their free time efficiently? Many student take advantage of the extended free time and procastinate with homework. No matter how long a teacher gives us to do an essay or a project, most students do it the night before. Also, there's simply too many school days off for seasonal breaks, holidays, national events (election day, etc.) and even the weekend. Calculate and that's a great amount of days off. All these days off is unnecessary and is a waste of time. Time should be valued and nottaken for granted. We should have less school days off in order for students to receive better education and raise to the next level at a much faster rate. My question to Miss Zohra is shouldn't the Board of Education provide us with more school days to enrich our education?

  26. Mr. Rehman thinks that the most important thing was “Providing every American with a quality higher education.” Look at our economy. Our schools are cutting programs like art, music, fencing, and many more fun activities for children. So how are we going to get out of this crisis and help today’s children with a better education?

  27. Ms. Sullivan thinks that the only way to get good grades is to get good teachers. What I don't understand is how would people know if the teacher is excellent or not? Different people have different perspectives on "Excellent Teachers". Some students need strict teachers, while some need nice teachers.

  28. Ms.Sullivan thinks that schools should hire outstanding teachers. My question to her is what if there aren't enough outstanding teachers for every school. And what if the outstanding teachers you found didn’t want to work at your school. What would you do after that?

  29. Mr. Webber said if we raise the test standards, more students will be motivated to study harder and be ready for college. My question to Mr. Webber is if we raise the test standard, wouldn’t that increase the failing rate for most students? If the students fail, won’t that decrease their motivation and cause them to give up on school? If the city gets a bad reputation for failing, won’t that decrease the number of students going to that city for schooling?
