9. During a lesson Natalie asked, "Who cares?" Good question. Should we care about the Jefferson Era? Due Weds Feb. 10th

How are events from the early 19th century relevant to our lives today? In other words, will studying 1810 prepare us for facing 2010? Using your notes from our Philadelphia Street-Fair and facts from the textbook  answer the question by making specific connections to the topics we've studied to prove your point.

Be critical, use logic and double check your reasoning.

  1. I think we should not care about the Jefferson Era for a number of reasons. First of all, not that many people really know about the Jefferson Era, some people might not even recognize Thomas Jefferson. Second of all, Thomas Jefferson is DEAD. Not that many people care for dead presidents from the 19th century. And last, most people of this era don’t focus on the past, unless they are nerds (no offense nerds).

  2. I think that we shouldn't care about the Jefferson Era. I think that because no one really cares about this. We would only care about this if Jefferson was alive, but he is'nt. He did something years ago and no one really knows what it is unless they are being taught about it in school. The past is the past. That is why i think that people don't really care about the Jefferson Era.

  3. I think we should not care about this because the Jefferson era is shadowed by the Napoleanic era and the Civil War era. NOt much people really knows alot about this era. The War of 1812 is an forgotten war because of the American Revolution and the Civil war. Most people these days dont really care about much of the history that made the country they live in.

  4. I do think that we should care about the Jefferson Era because we should know history. Also, Thomas Jefferson was the third President of the United States which is a fact that every American should know. However, the Jefferson Era will partially help us face 2010 and years to come. For example, a future president can learn many tips on becoming a president; such as making policies.
When Jefferson was in office, he asked Albert Gallatin, Secretary of Treasury, to help him find a way to eliminate domestic taxes, such as tax on whiskey. This is something a good president does to help his fellow Americans in 2010 and the future.
Thomas Jefferson sent two explorers named Lewis and Clark to find a river route across the west to the Pacific Ocean. Their search was not, successful, however the land they passed through known as the Louisiana Purchase, is now rich with natural resources.
The Jefferson Era is also not that important to students today because they could still succeed in life without knowing history. For example, someone who owns a jewelry store doesn’t need to know history in order to have a good business.

  5. think we should care about the Jefferson Era. The events that happened in the past will affect our future. Jefferson was the one who assigned the mission to Lewis and Clark. If Lewis and Clark did not explore the Louisiana Purchase, we would not know what was in there today. Today we know that there are natural resources in there. If there weren’t the Jefferson Era, there would still be slavery in Haiti. People might not care, but it will affect them someday.

  6. I don’t think we should care about the Jefferson Era anymore. I think that today in the year of 2010 is not significant. We can’t do anything about the events that happened long ago. I mean, I think we should still learn about it because it was a big part in our history. There are also some events today that have something to do with the Jefferson Era. We shouldn’t forget this because it was significant. All im saying is that isn’t as significant as it used to be.

  7. I think we should care about the Jefferson Era because it affects our lives today for a number of reasons. First of all, if Jefferson hadn’t written the Declaration of Independence, the United States would have not been an independent nation. Second of all, it was Thomas Jefferson who sent Lewis and Clark to explore the Louisiana Purchase. The expedition was a success because of the one hundred and seventy species that was discovered by Lewis and Clark. These resources helps us learn about the kind of animals, plants, etc., someone will expect when they travel around the Louisiana Purchase. Third of all, there has been rumors in which was said that President Jefferson fathered the children of his slave, Sally Hemmings. This rumor helps us be more concerned about our future Presidents. We sure don’t want any corrupted Presidents, and that’s why we are all knowing our President’s background as much as we can. Even though Thomas Jefferson deceased, it doesn’t mean we should forget about his past and what he had done for our country. Most of all, it was him who helped us all receive independence in the United States of America.

  8. No I dont think we should care about wat the Jefforson Era beacause history would repeat it self only when it is forgotten but we have not forgotten weat happened in the Jefforson Era yet. During the street fair we did learn a lot of things but thous facts don’t tell us anything about the futer they just tell us about the past and the present. Even thought Jefforson was a great president not all presindents will be like that. So I don’t thinks its significant to study the Jefforson Era.

  9. I think we should care about the Jefferson Era for a few reasons. One of the reasons is the Declaration Of Independence. If there wasn't a Declaration Of Independence, there wouldn't be an independent nation. Another reason is the Erie Canal. If it wasn't for the Erie Canal being built, there wouldn't be any way to transport goods in the east cost back then. Lots of history has happened in the Jefferson Era and it was a very important time period because it changed lots of things in country!

  10. I do not think we should care about the Jefferson Era. I think this because the Jefferson Era is not important to the time we are in now 2010. I mean the inventions and Jefferson is important because he was our third president and every one should care about him but not what went on during the time. In 2010 we have amazing technology that we do not need any other technology from the Jefferson Era. Also Jefferson is dead and we do not really study him much in school anymore, the kids no barley want to go to school and get an education so what makes them care about the Jefferson Era.

  11. I think we should defintely care the Jefferson Era. Nobody wants history to repeat itself. And by looking back into the past they can prevent plagues, famines, and modern slavery. Also because Thomas Jefferson did many things for us, like writing the declaration of independence. If he wouldn't have done that we would still be ruled by England.

  12. I think that we should care about some parts of the Jefferson Era such as the slavery movements because we would not want the same thing to happen again or about the Textile Mills because they are still used today. But there are many parts of the Jefferson Era that is not significant to our every day lives such as the doves and the war hawks. I say if it can't help us in ur lives, we shouldn't focus on it for too long.

  13. I think we should and should not care about the Jefferson Era. One reason is because as president, Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Purchase from the French and doubled the size of the U.S.A. If he didn’t, we would still have less than twenty states. From exploring the purchase, we found many new species of plants and animals and this helps us learn more about nature. Also, Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. Without him, we would still be called the thirteen colonies ruled under the British government. They would have been the most powerful government on Earth today, not us.
I think we shouldn’t care about the Jefferson Era for a couple of reasons. One reason is, mostly historians only know about the Jefferson Era. Also, people in the modern world, known as today, just care about ourselves and what is happening around us. We don’t really care who Thomas Jefferson or the Jefferson Era is because we think it doesn’t affect us.

  14. We should care about the Jefferson era because studying it could prepare us for facing 2010. Every event that has occurred in history since the beginning of time is in some way relevant to the world today. The Jefferson era is no exception. During the Jefferson era America was a young country with a weak government. We created the first banks, trains, even some new religions. No other nation especially helped us form the strong government we became. Today Iraq has a weak government. America made the decision to get involved with Iraq’s affairs and problems because we assumed we would be helping them. Studying the Jefferson era could help us determine if that decision was correct.
An other example is the war of 1812. The war itself might not be any more significant than any other war in history but the reasons for the war are certainly relevant. We had tense relations with Britain and a war broke out. If world leaders thought about this every time they met at the U.N. politics might be a little more peaceful. Just because we don’t actually think about these things in our every day lives doesn’t mean they aren’t relevant. As long as they happened we should remember why. Many people don’t care about them but society’s interest in history’s events don’t determine their relevance. These events are relevant today because only by studying them can we find out the truth about what really happened hundreds of years ago, what might happen in the future, and what is happening in the world today.

  15. I think that people should care about what he did as a man and who he was but not care about that time period. Everything happened in the past has happened already. We can NOT change what has already happened to th past. We can improve though we can help make our presidents in the future improve a work habbit. People might know that he has an airport named after him and mabey that is all. He is dead. I agree with Natalie, who cares about the Jefferson Era?(JFK Airport; Ring any bells?)

  16. I think we should care about the Jefferson era. I think so for these reasons. First of all I think that we should learn it because it is our history. Also I think we should learn about it because Jefferson is one of our presidents and since he cared about our country we should care about him.

  17. I think we should care about the Jefferson Era. During the Jefferson Era, many events took place that have made it possible to have our advanced lives today. One event, that must have been the most important in our history, is the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration and this gave Americans their rights. These rights have stayed the same ever since. Another event that took place during the Jefferson Era was Lewis and Clark’s expedition. Lewis and Clark explored the Louisiana Purchase after President Jefferson brought it from Napoleon and if they didn’t do this, no one would have known what was over there. These events in the Jefferson Era all changed many peoples lives then and now and helped build the United States of America.

  18. I think that we should partially care about the Jefferson Era. It was a very big time for our nation’s history, and very important things happened. One important thing was that the Louisiana Purchase happened, hugely increasing the size of the United States. Once explorers were sent into the purchase, we discovered many useful things, such as new animals and plants that would teach us more about nature. Also, the Declaration of Independence was signed, freeing us from Britain’s control.
We should also not care about the era. Almost all historians know about this Era, and people mostly care about modern times, not the past.

  19. I think we should care about the Jefferson Era.The reasons I think why we should care is that he wrote the Declaration of Independence. If he hadn't wrote that we would still be under the rule of British and would we want that?I also think we should care because Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to explore the Louisiana Purchase. On their travels they found one hundred and seventy new species. This helps a lot because it helps us understand our world and what lives on it.Also it is important because it helps us learn about the things that happened then, so we can be prepared for it in the present. This is part of history and we should all learn about it.Last but not least, it helps us understand the hardships we faced and how to endure them or at least try to prevent them.A lot of people are saying that Jefferson is dead so we shouldn't learn about him.But what about Washington and Lincoln? They are dead but we still learn about them.Jefferson was a great president and therefore everyone should learn about him and that Era, so I dissagree with
    Natalie.

  20. I think that we should care about the Jefferson Era. One reason is because Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. If it wasn’t for him, we would still be ruled by England. Another reason is that Jefferson had send Lewis and Clark to explore the Louisiana Purchase. They discovered one hundred and seventy new species. Thomas Jefferson was accused of fathering the children of his slave, Sally Hemming. We can learn from people’s mistakes. These are some of the reasons why we should care about the Jefferson Era.

  21. I strongly believe the Jefferson Era is extremely important to us, now and even years later. History repeats itself and we have to be prepared. The events like, yellow fever, Louisiana Purchase where we expended our country, The War Of 1812, The declaration Of Independence,
The Erie Canal, and more helps us understand the history and what will come next when we make a move. Those events helps us learn from our mistake. Also if some of our history didn't take place our country wouldn't be great and strong as we are now. Not only the Jefferson Era helps us understand, every event that took place before us is important to learn about.

  22. i dont think the jefferson era or any era of the past matters, sure when we learn about it we get smarter but history has happend, whats done cant be undone. what is the importance of knowing what happend in the times we didnt live? in my opinion, none. it would be the same as teaching someone something they already know. Knowing what happend in the past does not effect the furture, so leave it be.

  23. i do not think that the Jefferson era is important now in days because no one probably even knows what it is. i didn't even know what it was before our class discussions. these documents probably have had been important but they aren't now.

  24. Yes we should always think about the Jefferson Era since it colonized many things and got the American industry moving forward with new inventions, greater ideas, and we got more land for our people. This helped America move forward and advance to what we know the America today. If it wasn't for the Jefferson Era we wouldn't have most of the things we have today!
