10. Questioning. Due Friday March 13th.

Step 1- Read all the comments from the previous assignment.

Step 2- Choose one comment which is thoughtful.
Step 3-
First, paraphrase the comment you are responding to: For example: “Ms. Arta Skudrinja thinks that…”
Then, write a question about the comment. The question must be: clear, sincere, useful and be the sort of question which leads to more questions. The question you write must complicate the comment’s argument, make the reader of the comment you are questioning think deeper. Stir up some intellectual trouble.

  1. How will the past affect our future? If Jefferson didn’t send Lewis and Clark to the then some other president would or people’s curiosity would get too much for them to handle and they would go themselves to check it

  2. Mr. Ryan Webber said we should know some relevant information from the Jefferson Era such as slavery and textile mills. He also said that doves and war hawks do not matter anymore. My question to Mr. Ryan Webber is why do you think doves and war hawks do not matter? I think we still have doves and war hawks today, however they do not call themselves by these names. For example, you don’t think that we still have people against war or people who want war?

  3. Mr. Noel thinks that "he's dead why should we care. My question to sheldon is would you care if god forbid one of your relatives pased away would you care and want to know what he or she was like?

  4. Ms.Shnicer says "i do not think that the Jefferson era is important now in days because no one probably even knows what it is. i didn't even know what it was before our class discussions. these documents probably have had been important but they aren't now." So are you saying the Declaration of Independence wasn't importnant? The Declaration of Independce got our people free from England. If it wasn't ever written and no one thought of the idea, we would stillprobably be under Englands control. So do you wan to be under Englands control?

  5. Mr. Sheldon Noel thinks that not many people care for dead presidents from the 19th century. My question to Mr. Sheldon Noel is what if the presidents are dead, does it mean we should completely forget about them. Should we forget something the presidents did that was important? The presidents did something that affects us today.

  6. Mr.Dayton shor thinks that we should care about the jefferson era because he was our president. my question is now since he isnt alive why is it so important to care about the jefferson era>

  7. Mr. Kubiak says, " what is the importance of knowing what happend in the times we didnt live? in my opinion, none. it would be the same as teaching someone something they already know. Knowing what happend in the past does not effect the furture, so leave it be." Don't you think it's important to know all of this so history doesn't repeat itself?

  8. Ms. Polina Kurovskaya said “ Even though Jefferson was a great President not all presidents will be like that.” How can she say that when there was a rumor about Jefferson fathering the children of his slave, Sally Hemmings, without marriage, which was eventually proved to be true. Ms. Kurovskaya also mentioned how not all presidents will be like Jefferson. By this fact, how can one not be concerned about the nation’s next presidents after Jefferson’s relationship with Sally Hemmings was revealed? Therefore, my question to Ms. Kurovskaya is how can you be so sure that our next presidents will be great after the rumor about Jefferson turned out to be true?

  9. Ms.Swintelsky said that "we should think that we should care about the Jefferson Era because we should know history." My question to Ms.Swintelsky is that why should we care for someone who is dead, that was our past. we should now only care about the important things in our life right now, that are taking place today.

  11. Ms. Michelle Loyfman said "I don't think we should care about the Jefferson Era anymore." She also said that "it isn't as significant as it used to be." Well well well Michelle, i believe that our history is still important. Without the Declaration Of Independence, we wouldn't have an independent nation. And without an independent nation...who knows what would've happen! All i'm saying is that history is still very important!

  12. Ms. Kaitlin Sullivan says that the Jefferson Era is not important because the inventions are out-dated and the technology today is way better. But a lot more things happened in the Jefferson Era. Slavery, War of 1812, Haitian Delegation etc. My question is this, why should we forget important events like these?

  13. Mr. Dayton Shor said that we should care about the Jefferson era because “Jefferson is one of our presidents and since he cared about our country we should care about him.” My question to Mr. Shor is: What if we knew that Jefferson didn’t care about our country? Would that give us a reason not to care about the Jefferson era? We should care about the Jefferson era because of the history-changing events that occurred; the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark Expedition etc.

  14. Mr. Kubiak said "whats done cant be undone." Well Raymond, history can't be undone, true but my question is don't you know it can be repeated? If we learn things about our past and keep studying them, then history won't repeat itself.

  15. Mr. Daniel Luca said that it is important to know about the Jefferson era but at the same time he said that “we should also not care about the era. Almost all historians know about this Era and people mostly care about modern times, not the past.” Yes people care about the modern times but people should still care about the past. My question to Mr. Luca is, Isn't the whole reason why we are in the modern times, free from Britain and know about the Louisiana Purchase all thanks to Jefferson and in the time of the Jefferson Era? It all was not Jefferson but he did help write the Declaration of Independence and he sent Lewis and Clark to the expedition. So think about it.

  16. Ms.Shoukat said that we should not at all care about the Jefferson era. She said the past is the past, and that it does not matter anymore. That is almost like saying no one cares about when we became free from Britain, or got our first president. The things that have happened in history affected us all. My question to Ms.Shoukat is why shouldn’t we care about the Jefferson era just because Thomas Jefferson is dead? George Washington is dead, yet I’m quite sure MANY people care about what he did.

  17. Ms. Shaista Shoukat thinks that we shouldn’t care about the Jefferson era and said “people don’t really care about the Jefferson era … and no one really knows what it is unless they are being taught about it in school.” I think she is wrong when she says this because even though many people were educated on the Jefferson era, everyone knows about The Declaration of Independence, educated or not. Everyone knows that Jefferson wrote the document and was president of our young nation. People do care about things that have happened in the past so we can never make those mistakes again. Also, we can build from Jefferson’s accomplishments and the accomplishments from that era to create a better nation today. So, my question for Ms. Shoukat is, Why do you think people don’t care if you can see that Jefferson and the Jefferson era had such a large impact on the past and present?

  18. Mr.Sheldon Noel do you know how much the Jefferson Era has influenced us. Without that Era we wouldn't have had many things we have today. For example this Era has helped us get a bigger part of land called the Louisiana purchase which people went west to explore, make money, and more. The Jefferson Era helped make America even though President Jefferson is dead or not he helped us and we should remember him. Also Lewis and Clark had a big part in this to for discovering the vast lands and every one knows them so why shouldn't we remember this great moment in history? It did help us so... Why?

  19. Ms. Loyfman said “We can’t do anything about the events that happened long ago.” My question to her is if we can make cures for diseases today, can’t we study diseases like yellow fever from back then and create cures for them?

  20. Murrium said that "we should care because he wrote the Decleration of Independence." Well Murium, 56 people signed the Declaration of Independence and 5 people helped to write it that we dont acknowledge. So how is it fair that one man gets an entire era, while the others get none?

  21. Ms. Shoukat thinks that we shouldn’t care about the Jefferson era . She said “We would only care about this if Jefferson was alive, but he isn’t.” Well then Ms. Shoukat why do we learn and care about the things Washington or Lincoln did? She also said. “The past is the past.” Yes I admit and agree that nothing can be done to the past, but we can reflect and learn things from it. That way we could prevent any harmful things that might occur in the future. My question is to Ms. Shoukat is that, so we shouldn’t care about anything that is dead or from the past ,even though it might help us in certain ways in the present?

  22. Ms. Shoukat says, “We shouldn't care about the Jefferson Era. The past is the past.” My question to her is that the past may be the past but how is it not important? What happened in the past effects us in the present. Also, I believe the Jefferson Era is really important because Jefferson made the Embargo Act which soon led to another war against Britain in the future. It is important now because this act led to the self-reliance of the U.S.A. It doesn’t rely on other countries to survive as much as it did in the past.

  23. Ms. Loyfman said that the past (The Jefferson's Era) isn't significant anymore just because its the past. She states we can't do anything about the events that took place long time ago. I believe even though we can't change the past we can change our future, many events will come in the future that is similar to that era. Everyone learns from their mistake and their past. Also, getting educated about that era will help us understand out history, it doesn't hurt to learn about it. My question is what if the students doesn't learn about this and something similar takes place in the future?

  24. Ms. Shoukat said that, “we shouldn’t care about the Jefferson Era” and nobody “cares about this”. Also, she says we would only care if he was alive. That is absurd. Mr. Jefferson is part of our nation’s history just like any other president. He wrote the Declaration of Independence, so why wouldn’t you care about the Jefferson Era. So, I ask, why do you think we shouldn’t care about history when history affects us everyday?
Are you saying, the Jacksonian Era or any other era is not important? Well, they are important to our everyday lives just like the Jefferson Era.

  25. Ms. Michelle Loyfman said "I don't think we should care about the Jefferson Era anymore. It isn't as significant as it used to be." Michelle, i used to agree with you but then i read all of the other comments and they made me think about the whole thing differently. Now i think about more documents and they were very important such as the declaration of independence. So do you also think that the declaration isn't important, because if not then you and mee would be living a very poor life without many privileges and we wouldn't be the united states of america?
