12. Questions for central themes. Due Friday, May 7th

Step 1- Read all the comments from the previous assignment.

Step 2- Choose one comment which is thoughtful.
Step 3-
First, paraphrase the comment you are responding to: For example: “Ms. Mei thinks that…”

Then, write a question about the chosen comment. The question must be: clear, sincere, useful and be the sort of question which leads to more questions. The question you write must complicate the comment’s argument, make the reader of the comment you are questioning think deeper. Stir up some intellectual trouble. Find an example from US history which disproves their theory.

  2. Ms.Nixon says that the central theme in American History is that the U.S. always wanted the best for everyone. However, Ms.Nixon also states that America fought over five wars to help its allies. These allies are fighting against enemies, which makes them our enemies as well when we support the other side. Therefore, how does America want the best for everyone when it is continuously creating enemies by helping allies?

  3. I have a question for Mr. Ryan Webber. Mr. Webber said that “the central theme of America would be that greed, unreasonable and hypocritical judgments have been overshadowing America for years”. He also said that “America has been a nation full of poor judgment”. My question to Ryan is, Why is it so wrong that America wanted to be free from England, they wanted their freedom and with out freedom from England we would not be a country now we would still probably colonies? With slavery many people opposed but only half of the country wanted slavery so that half was greedy. Sometimes we have to be greedy if it is something better for many people not just yourself.

  4. Mr. Rehman thinks a central theme on American History is a good education, be successful, and rich. My question to Mr. Rehman is how is getting a good education a central theme in American History? Isn’t a central theme a big event or events that made a change in the United States? How is a good education an event that changed the United States?

  5. Mr. Luca thinks helping other countries is foolish. He states:" We wanted to help fight the communists, even though we did not have to." Are you saying we shouldn't help countries in need, do you think we were foolish to help Haiti just because we did not have to?

  6. Ms. Swintelsky belives that “A central theme in American History is that wars occur because of bad relationships between other states and countries.” I would disagree because if we would have had a bad relationship with other countries then why would countries trade with us and why would countries want the U.S to be allies with us.

  7. My question is for Ms. Shaista Shoukat. Ms. Shoukat says “a central theme in American History would be that in America we all should become nice and successful no matter what it takes” and my question for her is What about the America that did not want to be nice and only cared about? What about the ones with no intentions of trying hard to do well, they just gave up? One example of these kinds of people is slave owners. Slave owners thought of slaves as property and not people. They also rather fight then letting the slaves go free and created The Civil War to try to keep slavery in America. Yes, slave owner were successful but the slave owners did nothing and didn’t have any intensions of working hard so they forced their slaves to do all the work for them so they could become rich and successful without giving the slaves any credit. Another example is the Americans in our history that didn’t care about the Indians; all they wanted was the land the Indians were living on. Then were not trying to be nice at any time and they just cared about themselves. Furthermore, I disagree that central theme in American History would be that in America we all should become nice and successful no matter what it takes because many did not live that way in our countries history.

  10. Mr. Islam believes that America is hated by many people because it tries to be the best. My question to Mr. Islam is don't other nations respect America because it tries to be the best? Has this respect and influence not helped the people of America and the world?

  11. Ms.Blau i completely disagree with you since the American dream was to be in a free state where you can do anything you wish and maybe rise up to be the best and money didn't even have a meaning back then when the Europeans settled. There was no economy back then!

  12. Mr.Mahmud said that"I believe the central theme of America is we fight to the top and help our allies."My question to him is that, should we keep fighting wars just to help our allies and make new enemies?Wouldn't that be bad for us if we made more enemies just to help our allies when they don't even need our help?

  13. Mr. Mahmud said, "I believe the central theme of America is we fight to the top and help our allies." It is true that America has been in a lot of wars, but that doesn’t mean the central theme of American history is to fight. My question is, if we keep fighting, won’t our economy go down because of all the money to fight? Sometimes, our allies don’t need help in a fight or war, but we come and try to help them. Wouldn’t that be a loss of troops for no reason? Also, wouldn’t our ally get angry at us and maybe become our enemy?

  14. Ms Jacalyn Swintelsky says that America has war because of bad relationships. In most cases America itself is the problem. In the Indian Wars, America wanted more and more land, that’s why they kicked the Indians out of the west. This was caused by greed, not by bad relationships. In the current war, America wanted to change another countries government. My question is this, can every war Americans fight be blamed on both American and another country?

  16. Mr. Mahmud thinks the central theme of America is we fight to the top and help our allies. My question to Mr. Mahmud is that isn't it true that if you keep fighting your allies, wouldn't it just bring harm to the world and violence? Wouldn't you rather want a world of peace? So what im trying to say is how is war gonna help us fix our problems, we should shoud just fix our problems in peace and quiet and thats all.

  17. Mr. Mahmud said that "I believe the central theme of America is we fight to the top and help our allies." Do you really believe our central theme is completely based on us fighting? My question to Mr. Mahmud is, would helping our allies constantly be a good idea? Just think about all the wars we have been in just to help allies. If we didn’t help them that much, we would save money, and the lives of our soldiers.

  19. Ms. Skundrinja thinks that America is a strong country because of all the wars it has been in. My question to Ms. Skundrinja is “Out of all of the wars we have been, haven’t half of them been unnecessary? Think of the thousands of Americans that have died, just for these wars. Is this what makes us a strong country?

  20. Mr. Mahmud said, "I believe the central theme of America is we fight to the top and help our allies." It is true that America has been in alot of wars, but then think of all the peaceful negotiations weve had. weve helped other countries in crisises, for example we evacuated citizens in tokyo after the tsunami, secondly with the event in haiti we stopped to help them, despite the darkness. theres always a light

  22. Ms. Shoukat says, "a central theme in American History would be that in America we all should become nice and successful no matter what it takes." This is not completely true. I believe that America hasn't always been the nicest country even though it has helped countries such as Haiti. America has had slaves and cruelty in the past. Plus it hasn't been successful in all ways. It's a fact that America is one of the most polluted countries in the world." My question to her is, "Think about the past. Now, do you think that it has always been nice and successful?
